Some people say that their chosen profession is “in their blood.” This statement is extremely true for Jim Carter and his heritage. General Contracting has been a part of the Carter family for more than seven decades. Jim’s grandfather, Roy E. Carter obtained his CA – General Contractor’s license (#51346) in 1937. Jim’s father, Lennard Carter obtained his CA – General Contractor’s license (#141473) in 1953 and Jim obtained his CA – General Contractor’s license (#254406) in 1968.
As an apprentice carpenter from 1963-1966, and a journeyman carpenter from 1966-1970; Jim continued the family tradition and began his own General Contracting firm in 1970. He worked in both residential and commercial construction for more than six years. In the late seventies Jim took a position with a large construction firm and began his focus on the commercial side of the construction industry.
In 1980, Jim and Gary “Skip” Kelly decided to leverage their extensive construction knowledge and form Carter-Kelly Construction. In 1981, they incorporated the company and Jim has successfully guided CKI into one of the most respected construction firms in the El Dorado County / Northern California region. Twice the company has been nominated as “General Contractor of the Year”, once in 1994 and again just recently in 2008. The family tradition has continued for the Carter’s - Jim’s wife Maureen and his daughter Tiffany both play roles in the success of CKI.
Those who have worked with CKI over the years know that Jim Carter is a humble man who bases his company and his life on a foundation of integrity. CKI always does the right thing in business and in the communities in which they work. Jim and Maureen believe in supporting numerous charitable causes because they know contributions of time, money and personal effort make a difference in improving the quality of life for everyone in our communities.
Jim for many years has served on the Board of Directors for various charitable and business organizations. Today, he continues to volunteer his leadership and experience for the betterment of the community and the clients and partners with whom he works.
